Olds Super Cornet - 1938

This is an early LA-built Olds Super Cornet, serial number 5351. It has been fully serviced in our shop and is ready to play.

This horn being an early LA production of the Olds super cornet still has its unmodified, original Olds cornet reciever and an Olds 3C mouthpiece with the correct shank.

Condition: This horn retains about 50% of its original lacquer, now darkened into a nice vintage patina. It likely will not win any beauty contests, but it is in very good shape for its age. There are minor dings and general use wear throughout, consistent with a working instrument.

We found a very small pinhole in the bell next to the valve casing that appears to have been there for a long time. It has been patched as a precaution, though it likely had no effect on playability.

One bottom valve cap does not match, but it fits and functions correctly.

Work completed in our shop: This horn received a full ultrasonic cleaning and complete general service. A leak at one water key pip was repaired, removed, cleaned, and resoldered. It recieved some dent work in the back bow, and was tested finally with a Magnehelic to confirm tight solders and no leaks. In the end, this horn passed the test!

How it plays: The valves are fast and responsive, exactly what you expect from Olds. It is a solid, dependable player that responds well, slots cleanly, and feels right in the hands. This is a player's vintage cornet, not a shelf piece, and has been properly gone through and is ready to be used.
